The Top 5 Truths about Online Therapy in Michigan

People ask me all the time if I like being a therapist and my response is always the same, “Yes, I love it..” I truly see it is a privilege to be trusted with the inner thoughts and feelings of so many individuals. I may be biased, but I believe that everyone can benefit from therapy. As a therapist, it makes me sad that there are rumors about online counseling that prevent people from getting the help they want and need. After being a therapist for almost 10 years, here are what I consider the top 5 truths about therapy that I wish people knew.

Truth #1: Therapists don’t give advice.

Have I slipped up before and given advice? Of course. But I always regret it and it always backfires. Therapy is not about giving advice. The real goal of therapy is helping each person make their own decisions and determine what is best for themselves. A good therapist is there to guide you in making a decisions. They are here to help you see your potential blind spots, cognitive distortions and fears.

Truth #2: Therapists genuinely care about you as a person, not because we are paid.

We genuinely care about who we work with and no amount of money can change this. We form authentic relationships with our patients and value them as individuals. The service we are providing is therapeutic support, techniques and tools. We are not being paid to care. That cannot be bought.

Truth #3: Therapists cannot share what you tell them (unless you are a threat to yourself or someone else).

There are so many benefits to online therapy, but one of the main benefits is your therapist cannot gossip to your friends and family about you (or anyone else!). You never have to worry about your boss finding out what you said in therapy. You can be confident that what you say in therapy is confidential. The only things that therapists can keep secret are safety concerns. You can also give your therapist permission to share specific things with your doctors or other people in your life. If you have any questions about this, you can always ask your therapist to clarify!

Truth #4: You are in charge of your goals in online therapy.

When you start online counseling, your therapist will ask you about your symptoms and your goals. You will discuss together ways that you want your life to change and how you will know things will be different. Therapists do not set the goals for you. We are not here to make your decisions, tell you what to do, how to behave, believe, think or feel. We are here to support you in accomplishing the goals you set for yourself.

Truth #5: Never buy the “one size fits all” pants.

As a therapist, this is a common phrase I use with my patients. Just as I would never recommend buying the “one size fits all” pants at the store, there is not a “one size fits all” approach to online therapy. Why? Because each person responds differently to different techniques. There is not a “right” or “wrong” therapy approach. You are not a failure if one approach does not work for you, despite how many people tell you that type of therapy “saved their lives.”
